Solar rotation rate and its gradients during cycle 23

چکیده

Available helioseismic data now span almost the entire solar activity cycle 23 making it possible to study solar-cycle related changes of the solar rotation rate in detail. In this paper we study how the solar rotation rate, in particular, the zonal flows change with time. In addition to the zonal flows that show a well known pattern in the solar convection zone, we also study changes in the radial and latitudinal gradients of the rotation rate, particularly in the shear layer that is present in the immediate sub-surface layers of the Sun. In the case of the zonal-flow pattern, we find that the band indicating fast rotating region close to the equator seems to have bifurcated around 2005. Our investigation of the rotation-rate gradients show that the relative variation in the rotation-rate gradients is about 20% or more of their average values, which is much larger than the relative variation in the rotation rate itself. These results can be used to test predictions of various solar dynamo models. Subject headings: Sun: oscillations — Sun: rotation — Sun: interior

SOLAR CYCLE INDUCED VARIATIONS IN GONG p-MODE FREQUENCIES AND SPLITTINGS

We have analysed the recently available GONG p-mode frequencies and splitting coefficients for a period of three and half years, including the rapidly rising phase of solar cycle 23. The analysis of mean frequency shift with different activity indices shows that the shift is equally correlated with both magnetic and radiative indices. During the onset of the new cycle 23, we notice that the cha...

Solar Interior Rotation and its Variation

This article surveys the development of observational understanding of the interior rotation of the Sun and its temporal variation over approximately forty years, starting with the 1960s attempts to determine the solar core rotation from oblateness and proceeding through the development of helioseismology to the detailed modern picture of the internal rotation deduced from continuous helioseism...

Influence of projection effects on the observed differential rotation rate in the UV corona

Following previous investigations by Giordano and Mancuso [1] and Mancuso and Giordano [2,3] on the differential rotation of the solar corona as obtained through the analysis of the intensity time series of the O VI 1032 Å spectral line observed by the UVCS/SOHO telescope during solar cycle 23, we analysed the possible influence of projection effects of extended coronal structures on the observ...

Automated Detection of EUV Polar Coronal Holes During Solar Cycle 23

A new method for automated detection of polar coronal holes is presented. This method, called perimeter tracing, uses a series of 171, 195, and 304 Å full disk images from the Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) on SOHO over solar cycle 23 to measure the perimeter of polar coronal holes as they appear on the limbs. Perimeter tracing minimizes line-of-sight obscurations caused by the emi...
